9 months, huh. Didn't seem like that long.

Probably because I was doing movie reviews on aristotlealexander, so it's not like I haven't been blogging period. Like with most of the other long absenses, this is mainly because I had nothing to say. Nothing eventful happened. No epiphanies. Took a second trip to California last October. Working a job where I am underpaid and  underemployed. Learning how to program for the Android platform. Consistently trying to find good music in a sea of crap (Lil' Wayne? Horribly overrated. Andre 3000? What Lil' Wayne should aspire to be. 808s and Heartbreak? Interesting, but I don't think I'd quite call it good. Favorite song of 2008? Quite possibly 'Green Light' by John Legend.). The next couple of months should be better (at least if Tuesday goes well).

A Blogworthy Event (totally)

I've already told my family, I've already told my friends, so I figure the next logical step is to tell the rest of the world. Nothing major, just a cute little story that just happened to me.

So a couple of days ago, I basically win a "contest" being done by a porn website. The prize is supposed to be something small, a t-shirt. But I had already recieved a t-shirt from something else. So I get an e-mail from the website asking me who my favorite porn actresses are. I reply, and someone replies back, "I've got something up my sleeve". I'm racking my brain thinking what it could be (an autographed picture? a scene made just for me?). The next day, they ask for my phone number. I'm a little wary, but I think to myself, "I'm nobody, and they're a reputable company. The worst that could happen is that I get a few prank calls a day or something." So I do it. Few hours later, "Expect a phone call between 10-noon PST (12-2pm Central). 1:30pm, I get a phone call.

"Is this Ronald?"

"Yes, who is this?"

"It's Penny Flame."

Yup, my prize was a phone call from a porn star. Only lasted about 3 minutes, nothing of consequence actually said (though I did try to work in that I was going to be in California in a couple months), but it was the highlight of an otherwise very boring day/week/month, and something I wouldn't imagine happens to anyone all that often.

P.S. - Infer nothing from the currently listening.

A Blogworthy Event (fully)

Yay. Finally did something worth actually writing about, thanks to el_fudge and cnamongrl. She had a party, El and I DJed. It's not the first time I've DJed in public. It's not even the first time me and El have agreed to share duties before the party (that was New Years, I think). What it was was the first time that we had spun in public like we practice at his place (with us switching off between damn near every track). To me, the fun in that is the spontaneity, as you don't really know what the other person will play next, so you have to think a little bit on your feet. I was nervous at first, but after having a little to drink I calmed down and I think I did a pretty good job. The highlights:

1.) Some young girl kept requesting we play more current music, using :Lil' Wayne as her biggest example. We sorta didn't have her particular song (as in we did, but we couldn't get to it when she asked for it), and Molly liked what we were playing, so we said screw it. But apparently, this young girl got so pissed that she went to Molly and asked her to tell us to play more current music, to which Molly basically said "It's my party, and I like this music, so let it go." Then the girl offered her a dollar to tell us to play something more current. Which was taken when I played something the girl liked (but not Lil' Wayne).  But the girl came back, and El got so annoyed, he turned to me and said "Watch the dance floor", and then proceeded to play bachata and then some old school James Brown, which completely cleared the floor in a matter of about 5 minutes. The young girl left, and we proceeded to get back to our normal setlist.

2,) I walk over to the drinks, proceed to grab a shot of vodka, then down it. Saheed sees this, and as I walk by him, he asks, "Where was I for that shot?" I answered "You were standing right here."

3.) At the end of the night, we actually find the requested Lil' Wayne. So when El was about to break down the equipment, I put it on as the last song. El then proceeded to mess with the track in every way possible, and played with it for almost ten minutes. Even though there were only 7 people there at this point (the crew that rolled with me and El, and Molly and her sister) this extended the party another 20 minutes after that.

I'm trying to think of when the next party should be. Late May/Early June sounds good. We haven't thrown a party in Chicago since El's birthday in February, and we haven't done a fully set up one (El's was a surprise party where we had to throw together a decent amount of shit) since New Years. That sounds like it'll be nice enough outside for people to be wanting to go out, there could be more people in town since school (or at least UIUC) will be out by then, and if we started talking about it now we could probably get a decent amount of people to come. But, then again, I have no say in the matter, as with the Chicago parties, it isn't my equipment, and it isn't my apartment. I just show up, drink and spin a little. But I think what I'm saying makes sense. We'll see.

A Blogworthy Event (kinda)

So I did what should have been my first blogworthy event in months a couple weekends ago. Took a trip to L.A. for a weekend. Except for one thing. Even though I was in a completely different location, I still didn't do anything intreresting. There ended up being a couple of factors that lead to this. First, the hotel I was in was too far from the city to actually enjoy L.A. Second, even though I am pretty much old enough to rent a car, I don't really like driving and I'm not that good at it, so I had no way of getting into the city except for public transportation, which took to long for my travel companion's (my sister) desires. And third, the weekend I was showing up, both the people I knew in the area just happened to be busy for almost the entire time. One couldn't see me at all, the other only on Sunday night, when there was really nothing to do. See, even when I try to do something exciting, everything comes out boring. Oh well.

Just a sign of life

I have not disappeared. I am still here, lurking around. I've just got nothing useful or interesting to say at the moment.
